News Updates: Sidney Crosby’s trainer shuts down Sergei Bobrovsky concerns with a bold message about the Maple Leafs star’s longevity…..see more
When the Toronto Maple Leafs signed Sergei Bobrovsky on July 1, the 37-year-old’s age became the first topic people wanted to debate.
Fair enough. He posted a .877 save percentage across 52 appearances last season, Toronto missed the playoffs for the first time in nearly a decade, and the market expects answers, not experiments. But Andy O’Brien, the man who trained Sidney Crosby for over two decades and just joined the Leafs as Vice President of Sport Performance, isn’t buying the concern around Bobrovsky one bit.
O’Brien knows Bobrovsky better than almost anyone outside the goaltender’s own circle. He spent the last five years working with the Florida Panthers as a high-performance consultant, where he was right there for back-to-back Stanley Cup wins in 2024 and 2025. During that run, he watched Bobrovsky up close, saw how he trains, how he recovers, how seriously he takes the physical side of his craft.
Speaking on TSN’s First Up, O’Brien was direct: “Bob is the guy who’s in his late 30s. But his biologic age is younger than his chronologic age, if you ask me. He’s got a relatively young body. He’s young because he takes such good care of himself. He doesn’t have the same wear and tear as a goalie that’s 37, 38 years old.”
