On Aug. 9 — what would have been Whitney’s 63rd birthday — Mattel released the Barbie Signature Whitney Houston Doll, which celebrates the iconic singer’s “record-breaking career, legacy and timeless music that inspired generations of artists and continues to resonate with fans around the world,” per a press release.
The doll, which was created in collaboration with Whitney’s sister-in-law and executor of The Estate of Whitney E. Houston, Pat Houston, memorializes the singer’s look in the 1987 music video for “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me).”
Complete with a microphone stand, the doll is styled in a replica of the purple tank dress with colorful drop earrings and Whitney’s vibrant eye makeup. The launch comes during a milestone year celebrating 40 years of Whitney’s enduring legacy.
Throughout 2026, the Grammy winner is being celebrated through honors including The Recording Academy Special Merit Lifetime Achievement Award and the 2026 New Jersey Hall of Fame Capstone Event.
According to Pat, the Barbie doll is decades in the making.
“Whitney had never really endorsed anything, and we started having conversations about her brand … we talked about a Mattel doll 20 years ago,” she tells PEOPLE.
