Washington, D.C. is once again at the center of intense political activity as President Donald Trump faces a packed day of developments surrounding his administration, the economy and the upcoming U.S. midterm elections.

One of the major developments reported Thursday is that the U.S. Senate confirmed Keith Sonderling as Secretary of Labor, voting 47–41 shortly before senators left Washington for their midterm campaign activities. Sonderling had been serving as acting secretary since April.

At the same time, Trump has begun a 32-day campaign push aimed at supporting Republican candidates ahead of the November midterm elections. His schedule includes stops in Texas and Oklahoma, with additional campaign appearances expected in the weeks ahead.

Another Washington development is attracting attention: two Democratic lawmakers have called for independent investigations into taxpayer-funded television advertisements featuring President Trump that are airing ahead of the congressional elections.

Meanwhile, the White House continues to announce new initiatives and policy actions. Its official news page lists a number of recent presidential actions, including announcements involving American industry, government services and other administration priorities.

With the midterm elections approaching, Trump’s movements and announcements are likely to remain under close scrutiny in Washington and across the country.
