“‘Turning the People’s House Into His Palace’: AOC and other Democratic party leaders Denounce Trump’s Plan to Name Ballroom After Himself”

Former President Donald Trump’s latest move to demolish the East Wing of the White House to build a $300 million “grand ballroom” — which he reportedly plans to name after himself — has sparked outrage across the Democratic Party. Critics say the project represents yet another example of Trump’s “obsession with self-glorification” at the expense of national heritage.

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) led the charge in condemning the proposal, calling it “a grotesque display of power and narcissism.” In a post on X (formerly Twitter), she wrote, “The White House belongs to the American people — not to Donald Trump’s ego. Tearing down history to build a monument to himself is exactly the kind of authoritarian behavior we should all be alarmed by.”

Other Democratic leaders, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, echoed her sentiments. Schumer described the idea as “a dangerous rewrite of democracy’s most sacred symbol,” while Pelosi blasted it as “an insult to every president who served this nation with humility.”

According to leaked reports, Trump envisions the ballroom as a “world-class event space” where he could host foreign leaders, political galas, and “celebrations of American greatness.” However, insiders claim the facility would also serve as a personal branding statement — adorned with gold accents, his signature logo, and even portraits of himself alongside past presidents.

Democrats argue that the plan blurs the line between public office and personal empire. “It’s the People’s House, not Trump Tower,” said Senator Elizabeth Warren. “Renaming part of it after himself shows exactly what he values — power, profit, and prestige over principle.”

Meanwhile, Republican allies of Trump have defended the project, saying it would modernize a “neglected” part of the White House and symbolize “American excellence.” One aide close to Trump claimed, “He wants to leave behind something beautiful and lasting — a ballroom that represents his vision of America’s strength.”

But to critics, the project is less about legacy and more about vanity. AOC summed it up bluntly: “You don’t build democracy by putting your name on its walls.”
